Gábor Benő Pogány: Gate guard

(2013, Handshake Europe Sculpture Park)

Pogány’s “Gate guard” takes care of the entrance to the otherworld. It draws attention to itself with its unified, well-cohesive mass and the confidence of the sculptor’s anatomical knowledge (Veszeli Lajos 2013, Pannon Tükör 18(6)).

The original sculpture was made in 1985 in Szolnok. The one in Balatonalmádi is a painted polyester fiberglass. The bronze casting of the sculpture is in progress (2021).

Gábor Benő Pogány

Gábor Pogány Benő Munkácsy Prize-winning sculptor was born in 1962 in Szolnok. In 1982 he graduated at the Hungarian College of Fine Arts with a degree in sculpture. His master was József Somogyi. He has been presenting his works worldwide since 1987 in solo and group exhibitions. Many of his public sculptures can be found abroad. He lives and works in Szolnok. Since 2004 he has been the president of the Szolnok Art Association.
