The artist

Róbert Csíkszentmihályi

Róbert Csíkszentmihályi is a Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian medalist, sculptor and worthy artist awarded the title of the Artist of the Nation.

His father was the son of a Hungarian consul in Fiume, who attended an Italian school and married from Italy. They settled in Budapest, then Róbert Csíkszentmihályi was born there in 1940. The artist showed a great willingness to draw and paint as a child, so his parents gave him to the Fine Arts Small School on Török Street, where he entered the decorative sculpture department. He then applied to the College of Fine Arts, but was only admitted two years later, until then he was engaged in decorative sculpture. By his own admission, he was not very fond of this area, but he gained a great deal of useful experience.

Pál Pátzay and Iván Szabó were his masters at the College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1965. In his early years, he became more and more attracted to sculpture, and was greatly influenced by the figural compositions of Miklós Borsos and Ferenc Medgyessy. His study trips also brought him rich experiences, visiting Rome (1972, 1978, 1982), India (1980), Greece (1980), Sweden (1982).

His early sculptures were made of wood, limestone, and later, as a sculptor, he acquired noble materials, bronze, marble, and so on. The main field of his creative work became the sculpture of monuments, the decoration of church buildings with sculptures, in addition to which his small sculptures and medal art are significant. He has lived and worked in Szentendre since 1964.

He is an acclaimed artist both in his homeland and abroad. The strength of the art of figural representation and the expression of emotions, but not specifically traditional memorial sculpture, moves towards abstract art, which has a beneficial effect on the imagination of viewers. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize on March 15, 2013.
